Central to the work of Nivia Gonzalez is the celebration of the female form. The spirituality inherent in Nivia’s signature women, whether represented as a material figure, or a simple peasant, is the key to the universality of her appeal. The deep inward gaze of these women, often symbolized by closed eyes, gathers the viewer into an oasis of inner peace, strength, and serenity.
Screen-printing is the most painterly of the printing techniques. It allows the use of layer upon layer of color, exploiting line and mass in bold ways.
The inks can be printed as rich impastos or thin transparent glazes. The result is a print that is both vivid in hue and displays a rich tactile surface.
