Southbay Art: Canvas Prints, Canvas Print and Canvas Printing

The Popularity of Canvas Prints

Canvas prints have become a popular, sophisticated way to turn photos into works of art that have near archival permanence. The canvas print can be produced from photos taken with a moderate to high resolution digital cameras, or from high quality digital scans of existing prints. In most cases, old, fade and damaged photos can be scanned and brightened, sharpened and have flaws repaired using photo editing software prior making the canvas print. Canvas printing of photos evolved from the Giclee process (from a French term meaning spray) that was developed in the 1970s for making fine art prints with ink from ink-jet printers. In recent years the process and the inks have been refined for high end printing of photos on canvas.

Canvas Print: A True Keepsake

Canvas prints take your most special photos out of their dusty photo albums, or difficult to locate computer or digital media files and allow you to display them in their best light with all the richness and depth that canvas printing brings to the table. A canvas print elevates your prized and keepsake photos to near artwork status. Using the latest technologies and materials, the canvas print delivers keepsake quality at an amazingly low cost when compare to other means of high end reproduction.

The Durability of Canvas

When produced with quality inks, canvas prints are extremely durable. Paintings on canvas survive for centuries with minimal care and still retain most of their original colors and color intensity. The canvas printing process duplicates this durability. Additionally, the canvas print may have custom texturing applied to it during reproduction. This allows the canvas print purchaser to enhance the original with painterly effects such as fine or broad brush strokes or give the canvas print an impressionistic or surrealistic slant. Whatever your taste, there’s probably a canvas printing technique that will match your tastes.

Good Choices for Canvas Printing

Take a look through your digital files and photo albums. You’re apt to find a variety of photos that would make great candidates for canvas printing. Preserve a prized baby photo with a canvas print. A wedding or milestone anniversary would be a fine occasion to commemorate with a canvas print or a series of canvas prints of varying sizes. Travel photos, cherished pets, graduations, group photos of family gatherings all are fine subjects for canvas prints. Canvas prints are also an incredibly thoughtful gift for a friend or relative.

Serigraphy Tidbit

Screen-printing is the most painterly of the printing techniques. It allows the use of layer upon layer of color, exploiting line and mass in bold ways. The inks can be printed as rich impastos or thin transparent glazes. The result is a print that is both vivid in hue and displays a rich tactile surface.
